Two of the club’s Juniors, Joseph Haynes (Royal School Armagh) and Odhran Hamilton (St. Patrick’s Grammar School, Armagh), qualified for the Junior Boys 1500m and Minor Boys 800m respectively. On a day that saw heavy rain, wind and sun, the two lads ran brilliant PBs in fields of Ireland’s elite school boys, both doing their schools, clubs, coaches and parents proud. Joseph, running with the leading pack, put in a brilliant sprint finish to almost close the gap to 3rd place but was pipped on the line by the narrowest of margins to place 4th. Odhran ran a tactical race, hogging the inside line of the track, tucked in behind the excellent Dylan McBride (Grosvenor Grammar and Willowfield AC). Unfortunately Odhran couldn’t hold onto Dylan’s heels and was outran in the final 200m to come in a brilliant 2nd place in a PB of 2:08:53. This was Odhrán’s first individual All Ireland medal, and the first ever athletics All Ireland medal for his school. The races were streamed by Athletics Ireland and had the boys’ coaches, teachers and relatives screaming at televisions and tablets in schools, houses and shops around the town. Brilliant running lads – Ulster and Armagh middle distance is in great shape and bodes well for the future.
